The IGDA will be awarding 25 scholarships for this years Game Developers Conference. GDC is where game development professionals gather to share ideas and build the skills that the industry needs. Located in San Francisco, California, this year’s GDC will be held February 28th - March 4th 2011.

Qualifications & Scholarship Details

    * Scholarship applications must be submitted on or before Thursday, January 6th, 2010.
* Only full-time university (or similar) students are eligible, and must be 18 years of age or older as of February 28th, 2011.
* Applicant must be an IGDA Student Member in good standing. If you are not currently a Student Member, you must join the IGDA before applying for the scholarship. All applications will be verified.
* Past scholarship recipients are not eligible.
* Recipients will be awarded one All Access Pass, with access to all sessions, roundtables, and keynotes.
* Students are responsible for all travel arrangements and related costs.
* Scholarship applications will be judged by a panel of professional game developers.
* Each scholarship recipient will be paired with an industry mentor.
* Scholarship recipients will participate in a local studio visit and orientation session.
* Recipients will be announced before January 24th, 2010 (the early rate pricing deadline).

Judging Criteria

To help students hone their applications and to better understand what the judges are looking for, here’s the basic criteria that judges will use to rate applicants:

   1. Relevance - Will attending GDC help the student achieve his or her specific educational and/or career goals?
2. Initiative - Has the student demonstrated continued dedication to game development and effort to educate themselves?
3. Engagement - Has the student demonstrated a breadth of activity and volunteerism within their community?
4. Communication - Are the ideas expressed in the essays communicated effectively and efficiently?

“I highly recommend that anyone who is working towards breaking into the game industry attempt to attend as many GDCs as possible – the networking alone is worth the trip, and the diversity of sessions will keep all flavors of game developer interested well past the conference’s end date.” - Matthew Raymond Billock, 2006 Scholarship Recipient

If you would like to submit for a GDC student scholarship APPLY HERE.

A special thank you goes out to UBM Techweb for making these scholarships possible by contributing 25 GDC Mega passes to the IGDA!

The IGDA Foundation is proud to support the mission of the IGDA through Educational, Scientific and Charitable works. The Foundation is run by an all volunteer team with little or no administrative overhead. Over 98% of Contributions go directly to our projects

We have several IGDA related programs and have also adopted several support game developer related projects. Here’s a list of a few:

Numerous GDC Scholarships for worthy students with a passion for making games, including the Annual Eric Dybsand Memorial Scholarship for AI Development, entering its fifth year.

Additional Support of the IGDA Special Interest Groups and Chapters through SIG and Chapter Grants.

Targeted research in the Game Industry of unique value to individual developers.

The IGDA Accessibility SIG “Gamers with Disabilities” Project providing access to game for gamers with disabilities.

The Foundation has also adopted projects of unique value to the game development community for example:

The Patrick Downey Cancer Fund, to support the family of game artist Patrick Downey after his untimely loss to cancer.

The game designer preservation efforts of The Romero Archives. The Romero Archives was founded by programmer and game designer John Romero and is dedicated to preserving the work, processes and history of game design and game designers. The mission of the Romero Archives is five-fold:

To catalog and preserve the work of game designers.

To catalog and preserve the design process of game designers.

To make this work freely accessible to game historians, art historians, new media historians, academics, students of game design and game designers.

To encourage game developers to archive their design process for future study.

With the assistance of all the above, to make apparent the validity of game design as an art form.

We are constantly seeking other worthy projects in the game developer community that elevates our industry and our members lives.

Please consider supporting our efforts with a donation.

Their support helped cover the costs if this year’s scholorship recipent. This fund is a segregated account in at the Foundation with limitations on disbursement of any funds except to support this worthwhile program.

A big thank you goes out the GameDev.net for supporting this worthy cause.
